Understanding Hydrogen Water

Many people become confused when we talk about hydrogen water. Because water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (H2O), many people correctly say, “But doesn’t water already have hydrogen in it?”

However, H2O is a different form of hydrogen than the hydrogen in hydrogen water.

There are several different forms of hydrogen.

  1. The hydrogen ion (H+)

  2. The hydrogen anion (hydride) (H-)

  3. Hydrogen gas (H2)

  4. Hydrogen in other molecules/compounds (such as H2O)

Hydrogen water is simply water infused with hydrogen gas (H2). If you took a tank of hydrogen gas and dissolved it into water, you would get hydrogen water.

There are many methods of administering hydrogen gas. Hydrogen water is one of the most common methods.

Hydrogen gas, which is tasteless and odorless. It offers therapeutic benefits due to its antioxidant properties and ability to reduce oxidative stress.

Hydrogen water potentially enhances overall health and wellness. Hydrogen water has been granted GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status by the FDA. This status highlights its high safety profile for consumption.

Hydrogen water safety profile

One of the most striking aspects of molecular hydrogen (H2) therapy is its exceptional safety profile.

Balanced gut bacteria naturally make H2. A well-functioning gut microbiome generates H2 as a byproduct of fermentation, showing it comes from inside the body.

Many clinical studies have validated the safety of H2 across populations, such as pregnant women and children.

Research has shown that even at high concentrations, H2 does not exhibit toxic effects. There are no known contraindications for using H2 therapy alongside other medical treatments.

H2 has been used long term with deep sea divers, demonstrating its safety with no adverse effects reported.

Higher H2 levels in breath show that more H2 inside the body is linked to lower disease risks and longer life in some studies.

Potential Side Effects of Hydrogen Water

Hydrogen water has a very high safety profile (including its GRAS status by the FDA). However, it is important to mention the consumption of hydrogen water, like any other water, could lead to excessive or insufficient hydration .

As with any type of water, it's important to consume hydrogen water in moderation.

Drinking excessive amounts of water can lead to an electrolyte imbalance. An electrolyte imbalance occurs when the body’s essential minerals, such as sodium and potassium, are diluted. In fact, drinking too much water can be deadly.

While most people don’t need to worry about this, it is important to follow IHSA criteria , and only use products that at least meet this criteria.

For example, the IHSA clearly spells out the minimum dose of H2. Its listed at is 0.5 mg/day. This dose should be ingested by consuming no more than 1 L of water.

This is to prevent elderly and/or smaller individuals from drinking too much water to reach the minimum dose.

0.5 mg is considered to be the minimum therapeutic dose.

More research is needed to identify the therapeutic dose for specific diseases, as well as the optimal dose, which may be much higher.

Another potential side effect is general gastrointestinal discomfort when first drinking H2 water. While uncommon, some individuals might experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort like bloating or gas. These symptoms are usually temporary and tend to subside as the body adjusts to the intake of hydrogen water. Most people will not experience this symptom.

In fact, gastrointestinal discomfort is mainly reported anecdotally and not something generally found in the clinical studies. The reports of adverse effects occur at approximately the same rate as in the placebo group.

Current research supports the safety of hydrogen water. However, ongoing studies still are needed to further understand its efficacy and the optimal concentrations and dosages for specific conditions. Staying informed about the latest research can help you make the best decisions for your health.

Ensuring Safe Consumption of Hydrogen Water

The strong safety profile of molecular H2 means its therapeutic benefits can be explored without concerns about adverse effects.

This safety potential is rare, making H2 a very attractive option for more research and clinical use.

Safety Measures for Consuming Hydrogen Water

  1. Start now: Introduce hydrogen water into your daily routine and observe how your body reacts.

  2. Choose Trusted Brands: Select hydrogen water from reputable sources to ensure quality and safety.

  3. Consult Healthcare Professionals: If you have any health conditions or take medications, seek advice from your healthcare provider. Hydrogen water is not a replacement therapy for well-established protocols.

  4. Monitor Your Well-being: Pay attention to your body and make adjustments if necessary. If any mild discomfort persists, consult a healthcare professional.

Conclusion

Hydrogen water may offer promising health benefits due to its antioxidant properties and potential to reduce oxidative stress. It has been given GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status by the FDA. It's supported by research indicating its high safety profile.

By taking simple precautions and consulting with healthcare professionals when needed, you can safely enjoy hydrogen water as part of a healthy lifestyle.
